Production of a new, balanced and effective substitute feed for honey bees

The purpose of this project is to develop paste-like pollen substitute feed which provides all the necessary nutrients for the proper development of the bees.

It has been developed in collaboration with the Department of Zoology and Physical Anthropology and the Department of Food Technology, Nutrition and Bromatology of the University of Murcia and with the assistance of “Centro para el Desarrollo Tecnológico Industrial (CDTI)” of the Ministry of Industry, Economy and Competitiveness, and co-financed by the European Union (Fondos FEDER) through “Programa Operativo de Crecimiento Inteligente (2014-2020)”.

This project was carried out in two different phases

1st Phase

Objective: To develop bee feed intended to cover all the nutritional needs of the bee at different times of the year.
Conclusion: Apipasta Plus is a sugary paste that contains crude protein with an amino acid profile in accordance with that established by De Groot (1953), at the same time, it provides the concentration of vitamins present in the pollen, acting as a pollen substitute during the entire hive development.

2nd Phase

Objective: To evaluate the effects of Apipasta Plus on the development of the hive and the quality of honey.
Conclusion: The consumption of Apipasta Plus improves the performance of the hive, causing an increase in the population of bees and increased honey production. The quality of the honey obtained from the hives fed with Apipasta Plus was similar to those obtained from the hives not fed, in both cases, they complied with the provisions of Directive 2011/119/EC.
